The draft Community reference method for the determination of Solvent Yellow 124 (SY124, Euromarket) in gas oil, based on high-performance liquid chromatography with UV-detection (HPLC-UV) was validated. For the method validation study, 12 batches of samples containing various levels of SY124 were prepared. Samples were sent to 26 different laboratories. The interlaboratory trial was evaluated according to ISO 5725 and ISO 4259 for determination by HPLC-UV at 410 and 450 nm. After removal of outliers, repeatability and reproducibility standard deviations were calculated. At the level of 0.12 mg/L the repeatability standard deviation and the between laboratory standard deviation are of the same order. Reproducibility standard deviation at 0.12 mg/L is in the order predicted by the Horwitz equation (0.021 mg/L). The reproducibility standard deviation at 6 mg/L (batch 2), 0.23 mg/L, was better than was deemed, to be achievable (0.4 mg/L). Based on these standard deviations, limits for exceeding the specifications of 6 and 9 mg/L were calculated to be 5.6 and 9.5 mg/L respectively. Solutions of Solvent Yellow 124 (SY124) with nominal concentrations of 0.12 mg/L and 6.0 mg/L were prepared gravimetrically at IRMM. 1401 ampoules of EF317 (0.12 mg/L) and 1298 units of EF318 (6 mg/L) were prepared. The two materials were tested for homogeneity and heterogeneity was found negligible. Dispatch conditions were tested in a short-term stability study and neither freezing nor exposure to 60 °C for four weeks were found to alter the materials, thus making dispatch at ambient temperature possible. Stability under storage conditions was evaluated using data from a test batch. Uncertainties of stability for storage of 24 months were found 6 % (EF317) and 2 % (EF318), respectively. Purity, determined using nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis, Karl Fischer titration, gas-chromatography coupled to flame ionisation and mass spectrometric detectors as well as high performance liquid chromatography, was found to be 97.1 ± 0.8%. Based on these results, the following certified values are proposed: - EF317: 0.141 ± 0.018 mg/kg or 0.117 ±0.015 mg/L - EF318: 7.0 ± 0.4 mg/kg or 5.84 ± 0.28 mg/L The uncertainties are expanded uncertainties according to the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement with a coverage factor of 2, corresponding approximately to a confidence level of 95 %.
